Greetings,

Here is some food for thought. Statistically speaking, you are safer at work than you are at home. According to the National Safety Council 2008 Accident Facts looking at unintended worker deaths (excludes homicides and suicides), the death rate on the job in 2006 was .003 per every 200,000 hours at work. The death rate for these same workers at home was .009 per every 200,000 hours at home.

I find this even more interesting when you figure a good portion of the time you spend at home you are sleeping.

Sincerely,

Dwayne Towles

Federal Government Expects
Flu Preparedness Plans

Businesses Encouraged to Prepare for Flu Season

Since we last reported on the swine flu (now better known as H1N1) threat in the workplace in our May 2009 Newsletter, there has been increased emphasis from the federal government for businesses to be prepared for widespread seasonal and H1N1 flu. All sized organizations are being asked to have a plan to protect their workers and to maintain the continuity of their operations.

On August 19, Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano issued an OSHA National News Release stressing the need for businesses to plan and respond to the upcoming flu season. Mr. Locke said: "The President has mobilized the federal government to get America prepared. But the government can’t do it alone. For this effort to be successful, we need the business community to do its part."

Are Your OSHA Logs In Order?

Recordkeeping to be Scrutinized by Federal OSHA

Federal OSHA is initiating a national emphasis program (NEP) on recordkeeping to assess the accuracy of injury and illness data recorded by employers.

The recordkeeping NEP involves inspecting occupational injury and illness records prepared by businesses and enforcing regulatory requirements when employers are found to be under-recording injuries and illnesses.  The inspections include a records review, employee interviews, and a limited safety and health inspection of the workplace. The NEP will focus on selected employers with low injury rates in industry groups that tend to have high injury and illness rates.

US to Participate in Globally Harmonized Hazcom System

OSHA Issues Proposed Rule on the Globally Harmonized Hazard Communication System

In the September 30, 2009 publication of the Federal Register, OSHA announced the proposed rule to adopt the Globally Harmonized Hazard Communication System. This proposal is the result of moving the Hazard Communication Standard to the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of classification and labeling of chemicals.

The purpose of this system is an attempt to simplify the classification of chemical hazards, revise labeling that will include pictograms, hazard statements, and precautionary statements. Material Safety Data Sheets will be revised utilizing a specific format and definition of terms. This move to the UN Globally Harmonized System will hopefully eliminate redundant paperwork for companies that do business internationally.

Test Yourself ! OSHA Recordkeeping

OSHA Recordkeeping Quiz #7

Scenario: Your business is in the middle of flu season and many employees are calling in sick. Two of the employees are claiming that they have been diagnosed by their doctors with the H1N1 flu. They say they contracted the flu at work from a co-worker who has also been diagnosed with the H1N1. The two employees want you to report their illnesses because they say they got the flu at work.

Question: Are you required to report these flu related illnesses?

Why'd They Do That?

While the person who devised this interesting ladder arrangement may get a few points for ingenuity, we don’t think it scores well for safety.  The old adage of “give me a roll of duct tape and I can fix anything” comes to mind here.
