OSHA Issues Proposed Rule on the Globally Harmonized Hazard Communication System In the September 30, 2009 publication of the Federal Register, OSHA announced the proposed rule to adopt the Globally Harmonized Hazard Communication System. This proposal is the result of moving the Hazard Communication Standard to the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of classification and labeling of chemicals. The purpose of this system is an attempt to simplify the classification of chemical hazards, revise labeling that will include pictograms, hazard statements, and precautionary statements. Material Safety Data Sheets will be revised utilizing a specific format and definition of terms. This move to the UN Globally Harmonized System will hopefully eliminate redundant paperwork for companies that do business internationally.
